It was pointed out of me that I really hadn’t shared any stories of the hardships caused by Cyclone Larry. So,
let me try to correct that oversight….after all, being in the vicinity of a category 5 storm should produce some stories
of heroism and hardship:
The fact is that other than power outages…which have occurred at inopportune moments….such as when I was
in the shower and when Pam was in the shower also….we have not had many problems.
After a restless night when we awoke often expecting to hear the sound of the roof peeling off the building….but
never heard it….we bundled ourselves into the lobby of the hotel looking for breakfast and expecting to find stacks
of bottled water and MRE’s. We were greeted by a large buffet breakfast including omelets made to order, fresh coffee
and champagne.
After breakfast we walked a short distance through a light rain to the on-site café/store. Where, thankfully someone
had made it through the storm and was there to open the store. After purchasing the survival necessities: a bottle of Chardonnay,
a 6-pack of Hahn’s Premium beer and a bottle of Jack Daniels, we were ready to face the hardships of a day cut off from
the rest of Queensland.
We may be able to get into the town of Port Douglas
later today for a little while, but we thought it would be better to give them a few hours to sort things out after the storm.
