Part of the first transcontinental railroad, the Southern Pacific's passage over the Sierra Nevadas,
from Sparks, Nevada to Roseville, California, has always been a challenge for man and machine. Grades in both directions approximate
2.5%. Thirty-nine tunnels and nearly 40 miles of snow sheds protect the track from snowdrifts and avalanches - Sierra Nevada,
after all, is Spanish for "snow covered." Seeking more muscle for this route, the SP took delivery of two Baldwin articulated
2-8-8-2s in 1908. Initial trails, however, revealed that heat and exhaust gases in the tunnels and snowsheds made life nearly
unbearable for the engine crew. Although cab forwards had been tried before in Italy and northern California, legend has it
the SP cab forwards were inspired by an engineer who turned a Baldwin articulated around and ran it tender-first, putting
the smoke behind him so he could breathe while he did his job.
The first true Southern Pacific Cab Forwards were delivered in March of 1910 and proved so successful
that the SP eventually bought 254 more in various classes. Because the firebox and tender were at opposite ends of the locomotive,
the cab forwards burned oil, piped under pressure from the tender to the firebox. The cab in front gave the engineer the best
forward visibility of any steam locomotive.
The MTH Premier 20-3025-1 is Full O-Scale of the original AC-6 with its distinctive flat
cab front and rounded Vanderbilt tender. Delivered in 1930-31, the AC-6 class set the pattern for all future Cab Forwards,
with higher boiler pressure, more tractive effort, and the air compressors moved to the boiler front for better weight distribution.

| Taylor Made Trucks 18405 LT20CAB |
The third plastic truck in the Lionel series was #LT20CAB, special Lionel 100th Anniversary edition flatbed toy truck with
an 0/0-27 gauge lighted removable caboose! Only 8,004 pieces were made. Some were used by Sears as another test sample credit
card program and the remaining quantity was released to Lionel dealers and other retail stores. The toy truck features lights
and sound. Compartment below trailer has markings "LIONEL COAL" and "LIONEL SMOKE FLUID". The license plate has year 2000
markings like truck #2. Decoration on truck cab door, in addition to Lionel "L" logo, has "diesel fuel only" and "80,000 GVW"
inscription. The caboose features operating lights, they operate when caboose is mounted on the 3-rail track section of flatbed
trailer or on your train layout. However. DO NOT OPERATE on train layout without changing bulbs; the higher track power causes
bulb failure. Interestingly, the caboose started life as a Kusan model from the 1950's. It seems that more than one caboose
mold was made at that time and recently Taylor Made Trucks found another original Kusan mold, dormant for many years, and
used it for this Lionel licensed product. The caboose chassis is now marked with the Taylor Made Trucks logo. The caboose
also features a window insert, made new by Taylor for this caboose, metal wheels and operating knuckle couplers. The caboose
itself is decorated in the Lionel colors of orange and blue featuring the special Lionel 100th Anniversary logo along with
a Lionel Lines 2000 number on the caboose side. Caboose is NOT available separately. Both caboose AND flatbed toy truck have
matching gold hot-stamped serial numbering! Both are packaged in a full color Lionel-style box. Bargain
at $59 plus insured UPS. TTC does not have in stock.

A streamlined version of the GS-1,
the GS-2 Northern steam locomotives were the fulfillment of Southern Pacific's need for an engine that could withstand
extended runs. 4-8-4 Northerns were
born on the Northern Pacific railroad in 1926 and were known for their force on the road. More power was generated from
the standard eight drivers than from engines with fewer driving wheels. With the support of four trailing wheels, the
engine boasted a large firebox which increased boiler capacity. The Southern Pacific GS-2 came out in 1937 with cabs numbered 4410-4415. Its engine
had to have the muscle to pull a 12 car, 626-ton train at high speeds over long distances. The 4-8-4 was the
logical choice.
