Richard T. White lived in NYC attending several conservatories
(Guillmont, Julliard), and studied with several noted New York organists (Dr. Carl) during the 1930's and 1940's. He
attained his AGO certification in 1938, and the distinguished Fellow, American Guild of Organists in 1940. He played
in several churches in NYC, served in the Pacific during WWII, thereafter accepted a position in Plainfield NJ, commuting
from NYC (242 W 14th St, now the Abingdon Square Painters studio).
In 1950 St. John's Episcopal Church, Memphis
TN, called Mr. Richard T. White as organist & choirmaster. Mr. White served with distinction for thirty-six years,
maintaining high-quality adult and children’s choirs and overseeing an expansion of the organ in 1971. After his
1986 retirement, he remained an active parishioner, he is the official “Organist/Choirmaster Emeritus” of Saint
John’s church. A magnificent processional flag is dedicated to his honor; and recently, a choral commission was
performed at a special service for him. Today, his is comfortable at Allan-Morgan and is in Hospice care.
