When will the fall colors be at peak?

Big Meadows, Shenandoah National Park

People frequently ask, "When will the fall colors be at peak in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park?"

The answer is usually a long explanation.  The conditions vary throughout the park so much in plant speicies, altitude, direction slopes face, moisture content, soil composition, etc.  Colors start to show up in late September and continue to change throughout October.  Usually the second and third weeks of October are touted as "peak".

But if you think you need to wait until the middle of October to see color, just look at the photos below taken on September 25, 2007, in the meadow at Big Meadows, mile post 51.  That's right, all the wonderful fall colors in these photos were out in the meadow itself.  And yet there are still wildflowers in bloom.
