The Sassafras tree used for this art grew in a fencerow on a farm near Machipongo on the EasternShore of Virginia. It was a large tree for a sassafras and probably died of old age. The owner cut the wood for firewood and pulled the stump and saved it for my art work. The natural form, odor and colors make this a special piece. The title is from the form that resembles a flying fox bat with outstretched wings.
