This property near Smithfield, VA was an active commercial area in the early 1900’s. A railroad ran through the property and brought timber from the area and hauled shad on it’s run back. The home was built in 1921. Exquisite gardens surrounded the home. The property suffered a devastating blow by hurricane Isabel in September 2003. The owners were aware of my work and brought me pieces of the cedar wood to make into works of art. The owner moved his trailer to this site to avoid damage from the storm but instead the cedar blew down and the roots lifted the trailer 6 feet into the air. The title of this piece is from the dark patch on one side of the vessel that resembles a fox. It is a reminder of the many sly fox that slipped beneath the branches during the tree’s lifetime.
