Below are the Adult Education Courses I offer through NYS Teacher Centers:

Most Introductory/Overview classes can be as short as 2 or 3 hours. More in-depth classes, which include actively creating lesson plans, can be as long as 45 hours. Let me know what you need, or want, and I can customize these to your liking. All courses include follow-up support for the participants.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

  • GLOBEG.L.O.B.E. - I am a certified instructor for G.L.O.B.E. (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) - What is the GLOBE Program?

Training involves 7 - 35 contact hours, depending on the number of protocols you choose & complete. Interdisciplinary subjects include, science, math, technology, social studies, foreign languages, and language arts.

A typical 5-day Saturday or Summer workshop might look like this:

    Day 1 - Introduction/Overview (required); Atmosphere Protocol
Day 2 - Land Cover/Biology Protocol; MultiSpec Software
Day 3 - Soil Protocol (part 1); Hydrology Protocol
Day 4 - Soil Protocol (part 2); GLOBE web space (required)
Day 5 - Summary; Putting it all together; classroom planning

  • WETProject WET - I am a certified facilitator for Project WET (Water Education for Teachers). This is typically a no-cost half-day or full-day class. All participants receive free teacher materials.

MATHEMATICS

  • sketchpadGeometers' Sketchpad - I have been instructing teachers in this dynamic, interactive geometry software since 1990. Many teachers begin with a 3-hour awareness session, but this class is usually 15-45 hours depending on needs.
  • Fractal Mathematics & Chaos Theory - hands-on activities for MS & HS teachers/students. Although these topics are not on the NYS tests, they are engagingly and inherently beautful, thought provoking, and give students a glimpse of what some of the current mathematicians are doing within these fields. The activities include paper folding, magnetic penduliums, video feedback, small-group and full-class games, and computer explorations. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

  • free wikis for educationWikis, blogs & podcasts for the classroom - This class can be as brief or as involved as the participants want. A 3-hour overview will just scratch the surface, while 9-18 hours will alow the participants to try some of the technologies. The nature of these products suggests that learning will be ongoing.
  • Interactive White Boards (Smart, Interwrite, Promethian, etc.) - Learn the basics about what this technology offers; work with integrating it into your teaching; learn about the extras such as Bluetooth Pads for teacher/student use, and Remote Access of Whiteboard Classes. Start with a basic 3 hour intro, and move on to a customized class to meet your teaching needs.
  • Inspiration & Kidspiration - computer-based Graphic Organizers for classroom use. Free site licenses are available from the company for all NYS Teacher Centers to provide instruction. Both these classes are typically only 3 hours.
  • Get OpenOfficePortable Applications - software applications from the open-source field, includes programs which run on typical USB memory sticks, and leave no footprint behind on the host computers. Great for teachers who want good software for free, and for those who work at multiple sites within, or between, districts.
  • NYS Thinkfinity - I am a NYS Thinkfinity field trainer. 3 class levels are available.
  • Intel Leadership Forum - I am a certified instructor for this program. 4 hours for administrators and teacher leaders.
