Holography in the Classroom

TARGET AUDIENCE: Teachers of any grade level or discipline who are willing to learn about and/or integrate this technology. Great for MST connections!

LOCATION: where needed

DESCRIPTION: The original "Holography in the Classroom Project" began back in the 1980's. Many schools throughout NYS created labs for students in the arts. But many ventured into the connections between holography and mathematics and science. This workshop will provide teachers with information about laser & chemical safety. Teachers will have an opportunity to create two basic types of holograms (reflection & transmission), relate the activities to the NYS Standards (Art, Math, and/or Science), and will generate at least one lesson plan to address specific performance indicators.

Projected Learner Outcomes: (What participants will be able to apply in their job upon the completion of the workshop):

  • laser safety for classrooms
  • connect hologram creation activities to the NYS Learning Standards and Performance Indicators relative to your classroom objectives

ASSESSMENT:

  • Teacher-developed classroom lesson is shared and reviewed by the group.
  • Creation of a useable hologram.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED: a room that can be darkened, student-created vibration isolation table (sample image), laser pointer or HeNe gas laser, holographic film, developing chemistry, sinks. (HeNe gas laser and laser pointer, film, and chemistry can be brought to your site by Mr. Hazen)

MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS (IF APPROPRIATE):depends on the capacity of the "darkroom facility"; not more than 15.
