The "HEAVY LEU"

The local Romanian denomination is called "Leu" or "Lei" at plural.  These days one US dollar can buy about Lei 33,500.  The great number of digits is due to a rampant inflation during the early 1990s.  Recently the inflation has been kept under control at reasonable levels.  This made possible an explosion in the real estate market since mortgages are available again.  However the long number of zeros has become cumbersome and the Ministry of Finance decided to gradually replace the existing Leu with the so-called Heavy Leu beginning July 2005.  One Heavy Leu = 10,000 Lei.  This measure is in preparation of Romania joining the EU states and eventually replace Leu with Euro.  This measure provides a more gradual accommodation to the future monetary units.
