Prof. Dr. Nicolae Cajal, passed away on March 7 at Elias
Hospital. Mr. Cajal was one of the most influential personalities
in the modern history of Romania. During his life he held many
positions, such as, President of the Romanian Academy "Elias Foundation," President of the Romanian
Jewish Community, full member of the Romanian Academy, professor at the
Romanian School of Medicine any many more. His character is very well
defined by the words of his son-in-law "the departed was one of a kind
through his kindness, humaneness, wisdom and gentleness. Even his
enemies (if he ever had any) loved him." He always had time to
listen to everybody, as his daughter describe "the Cajal house [was
and] will remain an open house – "with no doors", day and night – to
all those in need, to the memory of my father." Dr. Cajal comes
from a family of physicians, his father was the pioneer of pediatrics
in Romania. He becomes a medical doctor in 1946 and built a
reputation in the field of virusology becoming an expert for the World
Health Organization. He is named president of the "Institute of
Virusology, Stefan Nicolau". Prof. Cajal was a frequent
visitor of the Boston area where he had many friends, part of his
family has been a resident of Newton MA for a long time. |

| IMMIGRATION
and EMIGRATION FACTS Do you know which
country had the most immigrants to the United States
from 1820 until present ? Well it's not China or Mexico.
Germany. German immigrants are by far the most numerous with more
than 7 millions immigrants. Mexico comes in second with 5.5
millions. The only east European country that makes the top ten
list in this category is ... Hungary with almost 1.7 millions
immigrants. In 1900 13.7% of the entire US population was foreign
born. In 1990 only 7.9% were foreign born. We hear a lot
about immigration but not a whole lot about emigration from US.
For instance, in the 1990s, while 7.3 millions immigrated to US,
1.6 millions emigrated from US. The only time in the history of
US when emigration was greater than immigration was during
1931-1940. There was net loss of about 120,000 people due to
emigration.

... and what happened to them The schedule of the Romanian Cultural Institute (former Romanian Cultural Center) in New York City is back on our web site (Events page) . Mr. MARIAN SIMION, assistant director of the Boston Theological Institute and a resident of Massachusetts will present on March 27 the white paper "DOES RELIGION INFLATE OR HEAL CONFLICTS ?" In the past years
there were many cultural events that took place in the Boston area,
theater, music, entertainment shows, etc. End of 2003 and
beginning of 2004 have been very quiet. The main reason for the
lack of cultural activities is the difficulty of the Romanian artists
to enter the United States. For instance, on March 19 Boston was
supposed to be one of the last stops in US for a group of Romanian
musicians. Half of them did not get the entry visa in
US. Other theater shows have been cancelled for the same
issue. While US is very strict with artists entry visas, Canada
has a different opinion. Many of the cancelled shows in US have
traveled to Canada and other places such as South America.
The Romanian Society of Columbia University in NYC invites you to join us for the Third Annual NORTHEAST COLLEGIATE ROMANIAN CULTURAL CONFERENCE, "Romania: Past, Present and Future". This event will take place on Friday, April 30 (9 AM 5 PM, followed by dinner at Romanian restaurant), at Columbia University in New York City, International Affairs Building, Broadway and 118th St. Kellog Center, 15th floor, New York City. This is a good opportunity for students to meet and share their ideas, as well as hear various speakers discuss important issues. Registration at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/romanian/form_participants.html |
