Part of Rock Harbor's fishing fleet

The Cape Cod National Seashore was created in the 1960's to protect the 1000's of acres of beach, coastal dunes and woodland from development. The end result is a National Park accessible by all for generations to come- roughly 40 miles of unspoiled, undeveloped coastline.

The beaches of the National Seashore, from Coast Guard Beach and Nauset Light Beach in Eastham; Great Island, Marconi and  Newcomb Hollow in Wellfleet; Balstrom in Truro, and Race Point in Provincetown are among the finest beaches in America.

Inland from nearby Coast Guard beach one can explore Fort Hill (reported to be haunted) overlooking Nauset Marsh, walk its wooded nature trails, or visit the historic home of whaler Captain Penniman, with its whale jawbone archway welcoming visitors.

A short drive south will take you to Hyannisport, the summer home of the Kennedy family. Close by in Hyannis Harbor take the Martha's Vineyard Ferry and spend the day on this picturesque island.

Nauset Light Looks Out to the Atlantic

A short drive north on Route 6 brings you to the town of Wellfleet.  Here, walk the quaint town center and visit the many shops and galleries that gave Wellfleet a reputation as the Cape's "Art Gallery Town." Be sure to take a brisk walk or short drive to picturesque Wellfleet Harbor, enjoying an ice cream cone on the Town Pier.

Further north is the former whaling port and thriving fishing village of Provincetown. This tourist center attracts visual artists the world over and has been an essential destination for creative folk over the years, from Tennessee Williams to Eugene O'Neill to Jack Kerouac to Norman Mailer.  Park at the public parking lot on MacMillan Wharf {fee} and take a stroll through Commercial Street's shops and galleries.  Dine in one of the fine restaurants or return to the pier for a Whale Watch trip aboard the Portuguese Princess or Dolphin Whale Watch Fleet.

Early morning fishing off Nauset Light for stripers and blues.

If outdoor activities suit you, follow the 34 mile Cape Cod Rail Trail- just down the road- from Eastham to Dennis to Chatham or north to Wellfleet, passing kettle ponds, cranberry bogs, woodland and wetlands. Stop at historic sites or restaurants along the way.

Take in a game in Orleans as the Cardinals take on competitors from the outstanding Cape Cod Baseball League where Nomar Garciaparra, Jason Varitek, Frank Thomas and others got their start.  Truly a "Field of Dreams" experience!

Rent a canoe or kayak and explore the tidal rivers of Nauset Marsh or  Cape Cod Bay, get some binocs and birdwatch at Wellfleet's Audubon, find a fishing rod and surf cast off the beach for striper and blues... or just stargaze under crystal clear  skies.

Cape Cod Bike Rail Trail

Surf cast off the beach for blues and stripers or fish Herring Pond for trout or Great Pond for small and large mouth bass and pickerel. Visit Rock Harbor in the early morning to charter a boat and expert local fishing guide, or visit in the late afternoon to see the fishing fleet return with their daily catch as the sun sets behind them.
