About the CFR – a brief description
The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) is a massive collection of regulations.
Altogether it fills shelf upon shelf in a library. A fair number of questions
on the captain's exam are drawn from this set of documents. At the
test center you will be given several volumes from the CFR ("open book").
Your job will be to find answers to questions on your test. Anything
from the description of a B-II fire exinguisher to engine room ventilation
requirements and much, much more. Anyone who sits for the captain's
exam needs to be a little familiar with the CFR. You can do it by
spending a few afternoons in the library, or you can do it in your home
with Edcon's CFR CD. The material in our
CFR CD contains the all-important Small Passenger Vessel Regulations
and the rules on Uninspected Vessels. It has the most relevant
parts of CFR 46 and some of the material from CFR 33. It is highly
recommended for Master's candidates, and is of use to OUPV test-takers
as well.
About Captain's Test Illustrations
When you take the captains test (OUPV or Master's), you get a booklet
of test illustrations. Some of the multiple choice questions will
say: "Look at illustration number so-and-so, and answer the following
question ....." The illustrations cover things like lights, dayshapes,
knots, tackles, parts of a boat, passing and crossing situations, weather,
deck machinery, cargo stowage, load lines, fire fighting gear, and various
other things, even star charts for celestial navigation (normally only
on Master's, and even then the celestial questions are both easy and few
-- don't panic). Some of these dozens of illustrations appear
in our Jumbo Collection of Questions. With
our CD you get to look at all the illustrations used in the Coast
Guard captain's exam.
For $14.95 you get both the CFR
reproductions and the test illustrations on a single cd.
With the CD you can view these items on your
computer and/or print out text or illustrations for more careful study.
