There are several ways of preparing for the Coast Guard captain's exam.

• You can sign up for a class given by a training school. This will cost around $750 and will take up, typically, numerous days of mandatory attendance at classes, plus study time at home. If you want a Master's you will have to come back for a second course.
• You can purchase high-tech training materials, with videos, specialized software, and the like. This will cost no less than $300, and may be all show and no results.
• Or you can study at home with Edcon's Exam Preparation materials, for as little as around $50, and get what we think is the package that will give you the best chance of success.

What about the claims of some publishers who say, "We give you all 10,000 Coast Guard questions."   Isn't that better than the several hundred questions Edcon provides to you?  Answer:  No!!   Unless you plan on testing for Captain of the Queen Mary II.  Here's why: just kidding about the Queen Mary, but a large portion of the total questions in the test banks have nothing to do with OUPV or 100 Ton Master licenses.  How are you supposed to know "which questions are which."  We spend countless hours editing to give you questions that really count.

And, what about the schools that advertise "No Coast Guard Test".  They mean that they will administer a test made up of the usual Coast Guard questions, but it will be at their site.  After the test, you will still have to go the Coast Guard Regional Exam Center for paperwork purposes, etc.  This may mean that you will travel extensively, first to the school, stay in a hotel, etc. then later travel to the Coast Guard center for mandatory personal appearance(s).
