Some of the training programs offer money back if I don't pass. Why doesn't Edcon?

Answer: Money back under what condition? After three unsuccessful attempts? Also, don't ever expect a free lunch, if money is readily refunded, that has to be built into the price for the rest of the people. If you are serious, do you want to pay extra so that casual challengers can get their money back?

What makes Edcon's training materials different or better?

Answer: The Edcon team includes recent test takers and professional educators. We know how the exam is currently set up, and we know how to present material for easy and effective learning. A good captain doesn't necessarily make a good teacher. We cover both sides. Also, importantly, we have analyzed the actual Coast Guard test data banks (thanks to the Freedom of Information Act) and tell you what subjects are most likely to come up. Our materials are based on statistical analysis of the test banks, and we pass what we learned along to you.

How does the emphasis on practice questions fit in?

Answer: Our staff strongly believes that practice questions are the key to success. But the questions have to be those currently in use, and have to be error free. We take extra measures to ensure the questions are up to date and accurate.

What opportunities will having a license open up for me?

Answer: That depends on the license, but you may want to run charters on your own boat, either once in a while, or on a full-time basis (OUPV needed -- up to 6 passengers). You may want to get involved in the resort field, running a tour boat, or party fishing boat (Master needed). There are expanding opportunities in the ferry and water taxi field. Or this may be your starting point in a career as a deck officer on a large vessel, once your "foot is in the door", upgrading to higher licenses is not that hard. For those who don't have any particular aims toward a career at sea, there is tremendous satisfaction in earning the title "Captain". And, in this day of job insecurity, job obsolescence, etc., it's awfully nice to know that you possess another skill to fall back on!

How much will I have to study?

Answer: Assuming part-time study involving a few nights a week, plus some work on weekends, the time required may be from a few weeks to a few months. Our program is designed to get you into the areas where you need work. Our diagnostic test will help head you in the right directions and avoid wasted time.
