Little known to American travelers, the vast Canaima National Park in the remote jungles of Venezuela offers some of the most spectacular landscapes on earth. While Angel Falls is the highest waterfall in the world, there are hundreds of other beautiful waterfalls to be seen in this area. If you make your travel arrangements through an American agent it will cost you about 30% more than if you book directly through a Venezuelan agency. We made our travel and lodging arrangements directly through Hoturvensa Lodge with much help from Vilma Capriles who can be reached at: 011-58-212-976-0530 (office) or 011-58-412-227-7453 (cell phone)
Everyone in our group agreed that Miguel Fernandez our Pemon Indian guide was the best guide any of us had experienced anywhere in our travels. Fluent in English, German and Spanish as well as his native Pemon Indian language Miguel is exceptionally knowledgeable about jungle plants and animals as well as the geology of the area and was able to point out many things we might otherwise have missed. Although broadly educated Miguel has particular expertise when it comes to the culture and skills of the local Pemon group of peoples. Environmentally aware, Miguel lives in the traditional way of his people in the indigenous community at Canaima. To arrange for the most rewarding expeditions in the area you might want to contact Miguel directly at: snakebone505@hotmail.com or call him at: 0414-8532637. To arrange for a thrill-of-a-lifetime flight into the Devil’s Canyon and up over Angel Falls and then to Churun Falls beyond contact pilot Luis Soto at: luisotove@yahoo.com
