Ooooooooooovertime!

Rule 4.10 of the Little League Rules says, “A regulation game consists of six innings, unless extended because of a tie score ...”

The league record for length of a game is 13 innings. On Thursday 24-Jun-1982, Kurgan and Kiwanis were tied, 4-4, after eight innings when darkness descended (the league only installed lights in 1990). That Saturday morning, they came back and kept playing -- for another five innings. After Kiwanis put three runs across in the top of the 13th, Kurgan scored four (with only one out) in their half to record an improbable 10-9 victory. The win was only Kurgan’s second of the year, while Kiwanis had entered the game with a magic number of one.

In 1999, DiNoto Fuel set a league record by winning four (count ’em) extra-inning games, including a 3-2, 9-inning win over American League champion Lions. The record for total extra-inning games played in a season is six, by Rotary in 1981 (they went 3-3).

The following table outlines the success (or lack thereof) of Rutherford Little League’s Major level teams in extra-inning regular season games from 1981 through 2007.
