Biography
RADMILA ZUMAN has resided in Northern New York since
1970. She studied traditional lacemaking in her native Czechoslovakia,
the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, Germany, England, Canada, Holland
and Slovakia. Though her art and technique is reminiscent of the
traditional style of those countries, she has taken it a step beyond
traditional concepts and added another dimension.
As an avid collector of antique laces, Radmila appreciates
traditional laces for their beauty and she admires the skills of the old world lacemakers
who made them. However, she strongly believes that the traditional art of lacemaking should
be taken a little further into the present days. Experimentation with
new fibers and shapes allows her to bring lacemaking to new
dimensions that better suit contemporary tastes.
Trained as a teacher, Radmila has taught lacemaking
for more than 25 years in 22 states in the USA, and in Canada and Europe,
always encouraging creativity in her classes.
Radmila exhibits her work, often in three dimensional
presentation, in juried shows. She has won several prestigious prizes
and awards at national and international exhibitions.
Recently she published a book, now in its second edition, on innovating lace patterns.
Juried Exhibitions
Since 1971 Radmila has participated in more than 50 juried exhibitions
in galleries, museums and universities in Canada and in the USA (locally
and nationwide), and in Europe (Holland, Italy, Germany, and the Czech Republic),
several times as a solo artist. She has received many prizes
and awards for her pieces
