Sailbourne Edogawa Rampo, generally known as Eddie, was born on the evening
of July 4, 2001 and has never quite gotten over the shock. He was one of the first litter
bred by Sailbourne Cattery, the son of Okamisan, a mi-ke (calico) and Monkey, a solid
black. Like his father, Eddie is solid black; like his mother, he's very shy and
frightened of people.
As the first solid black Bobtail we had bred, we decided to give him the name "Edogawa Rampo," the pen name of Hirai Taro, widely known as the father of the Japanese detective story. "Edogawa Rampo" is how you say "Edgar Allan Poe" in Japanese! (You can find a fan site here and the Wikipedia entry for Edogawa Rampo here. A number of his works have been translated into English and are great reading.) |
| Eddie is considered a show quality cat, and indeed did reasonably well during his
very short show career. Unfortunately, his personality just isn't amenable to showing.
At one point a few years ago, we tried to find him a new home. A pair of college girls
gladly adopted him -- despite having seen very little of him save a large black blur
disappearing up the stairs -- but after six weeks in their house, they decided to
bring him back. In all that time, he wouldn't come out from under the bed, or behind the
coffeepot, and so they decided perhaps he would be happier with us.
As he has grown older, he has, slowly, warmed up to us. At first, he would come to us, demanding attention, but only in the bedroom, when we were coming in to sleep. In the last six months or so, he's undergone a startling change: now he will climb all over us, even settle down in our laps for a bit, anywhere in the house. Only the fact that it's still very hard to approach him without having him run away keeps us from thinking that someone came in the middle of the night and gave us a different cat! |
