The Salamcana Area Museum Association was founded in 1995 at the urging of Mayor Rosalyn Hoag who was concerned that much of the city's history was being "thrown away" for lack of an entity to collect and preserve it. The group began raising funds and collecting items even before they had a home for their museum.

The Salamanca Area Historical Society had several temporary homes before signing a lease with the City for the historic bank building at 125 Main St. The City obtained a Small Cities Grant program to restore the building. The Historical Society moved into it's new permanent home on May 14th, 2004
