DO YOU KNOW THE ORIGIN OF THE PHRASE?
Buy a Pig in a Poke-
This phrase is found in a collection of proverbs recorded by Jon
Heywood in 1546. A bag was called a poke and oftentimes dishonest merchants put a cat into a poke and tried to pass it off
as a suckling pig. This practice gave birth to another well known phrase- To let the cat out of the bag- Discovering the deception
before the purchase transaction was complete.
Have something "IN THE BAG"-
This expression is used when the speaker feels that
the outcome is assured and most probably comes from early 20th Century America referring to the bag a hunter carried
to hold small game after a successful kill.
