LICSN held a series of regional meetings in 2007 and 2008 to encourage local and regional initiatives aimed at publicizing global warming and promoting policy changes.  LICSN maintained a calendar of events through the spring of 2009.  This site was last updated October, 2009.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION

“Great Greening of Southampton”  

The Sustainable Southampton “Green” Committee is coordinating the first “Great Greening of Southampton” month throughout October. The goal is to engage all members of the community through a series of events addressing recycling, gardening, conservation, alternative energy, transportation, and other “going green” ideas for homes and businesses.

 Scheduled events to date include: “Greening of the South Fork: One Year Later” forum of East End Mayors and Supervisors on October 5th presented by GAIN and the League of Women Voters at the Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton at 7:00 p.m.; a discussion forum on Southampton’s Sustainable Future at the Stony Brook Southampton Campus October 9th at 7:30 p.m.; a “Greening Proclamation” press conference with Town Supervisor, Linda Kabot, Town Board members, Green Committee member Dr. Scott Carlin, and Dr. James Quigley of Stony Brook Southampton on the steps of Town Hall October 16th at 1:00 p.m.; a lively ‘Talkin’ Trash”  conversation presented by Sustainable Southampton and 725 Green at Southampton Youth Services on Major’s Path in Southampton on October 20th at 7:00 p.m.: and a special presentation by the NY League of Conservation Voters, “Blueprint For The East End” on October 23rd at the Water Mill Center at 7:00 p.m.

Several Town-wide events are planned for Saturday, October 24th which coincides with the International Day of Climate Action, including trail hikes, an organic garden tour, bicycle tours, networking events, discussion groups and more. Several schools are also scheduled to participate with assemblies and class projects.

·    East End Bike Rides: 30 mile ride leaves @ 10am; 7.4 mile ride leaves @ 11am

·    Downtown Riverhead Street Fair, Farmers Market, & Music Begins @ 12 noon. Main St and Riverfront Park Between Peconic Ave and Atlantis Marine World. The event is designed to include local businesses- to highlight the importance of shopping local and redeveloping and investing in downtown, walkable communities. Riverhead is a treasure to celebrate.

* Experience Sea Level Rise: Various Downtown Displays will mark the high and low sea level around downtown - showing the water line under different possible scenarios.

Title: The Latest Expert Information on Climate Science, Policy, and Green Economics.

Location: Garden City, NY at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. Date/Time: Saturday October 24th from 4pm to 6pm (doors open at 3:30)

Our two speakers are experts in their respective areas of science, and of policy and economics.  We have a comfortable auditorium space and will make the event enjoyable and informative. You will be able to ask questions of the speakers, as well as participate in open discussion and contribute ideas for green action.  Take the Meadowbrook Parkway and head west on Old Country Road, or take Herricks Road and head east on Old Country Road.  Doors will open at 3:30pm.

Dr. Vic DiVenere is a geologist, a professor at C.W. Post, and a frequent speaker on climate issues.  His topic is The Reality of Climate Change and Its Relation to Earth's Past and Future.

Dr. DiVenere likes to put climate change into perspective in terms of the climates that Earth has faced in its (long) history, and also likes to talk about the evidence for the reality and magnitude of climate change, our part in it through alteration of the atmosphere and surface, and the impacts, especially the nature of the threat of sea level rise to coastal communities.

Frank Morris is chairperson of Long Island Sierra Club, and vice chairperson of NYS Sierra Club, and has spoken widely about current policies and their impact on the way we live.  His topic is Fragmentation in Environmentalism, and Promoting Change through a New, Greener Economy.

Frank is founder of Ecologic Advisors, www.ecologicadvisors.us, a NYS Registered Investment Advisors specializing in environmental investing.

Germany Begins Ban on Polluting Cars in City Centers. Drivers in Berlin, Cologne and Hanover are now required to display a coloured badge showing the level of pollution caused by their vehicle, with a scale of red, yellow and green. An estimated 1.7 million old diesel cars and vans, will not qualify for even the most polluting red badge.
