  • 2009 Awards Program – June 7, 2009

Once again Nancy Haar and her committee did an outstanding job in coordinating our annual Awards Program. Students from Hanover, Caroline and King William counties were recognized for their honor, leadership, service, discipline, courage and patriotism. Held at Fork Episcopal Church, a crowd of about 160 people attended the ceremony and reception following. Guest speaker, Dr. Clint Norris, gave a most interesting address – "Secrets of a Good Citizen". The following awards were presented to students in Hanover, Caroline and King William Count Public Schools:

  • JROTC Awards: An outstanding cadet in each JROTC program who has shown academic excellence, dependability, character, military discipline, leadership, and understanding of the importance of ROTC training is honored with a bronze medal and certificate.
  • Senior Good Citizen Awards: The outstanding graduating student from each high school who has shown the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership and patriotism is presented with a bronze medal, book award and certificate.
  • Scotchtown Government Scholarship - $500
  • DAR State Nursing Scholarship (sponsored by Scotchtown Chapter) – 4th place $500
  • Good Citizenship Awards: The outstanding 8th grade student from each middle school who has demonstrated high principles, service, courage, responsibility, and patriotism is honored with a medal and a certificate, and the outstanding 5th grade student from each elementary school who has acted with honesty and loyalty, cooperation and unselfishness, strength of character, dependability, and patriotism is honored with a medal and a certificate.

We congratulate each of the young people for their accomplishments.

Project Patriot

Members of local DAR chapters were invited to take part in this project whether or not they were able to attend the Continental Congress in Washington, D.C.

On Monday, July 6, members attending the summer Continental Congress gathered in the Banquet Hall  to pack phone cards and write personal notes of thanks and encouragement to our wounded warriors at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. Paper and pens were provided for each Daughter to write notes expressing her, and the DAR’s, gratitude for the service and sacrifices which our wounded military personnel have undergone. Each note was packed with a 60-minute phone card, personalized with the DAR logo.
