GE 802 1947 TV/Radio/Phonograph Console Restoration

Discovered in a garage attic in Flemington, New Jersey by estate liquidators in Spring 2001, this set was probably a single-owner unit that sat unused for at least 40 years. It had sustained considerable damage from both the attic environment and personal abuse during that time. The attic was unheated and un-airconditioned and not connected with the main house. The loudspeaker and box were violently stripped out and missing, doors ripped off, and phonograph drawer damaged. All vacuum tubes accessible without chassis removal were gone (perhaps thrown against rocks by kids). The focus coil was found in a different section of the attic (probably used for a kid's electrical experiments). The ion trap asssembly is also gone.

The 78 RPM record changer mechanism was jammed. It was discovered that a spring was missing, probably causing the initial jam, and the owner may have tried to force the turntable, causing further damage. After replacing the spring, lubricating, and bending back a few levers, the turntable became fully funcional but is still awaiting cartridge testing.

Update (7/16/01): The set has been fully repopulated with "used but test good" vacuum tubes and is now awaiting replacement of all electrolytic and paper capacitors.
