A person, reading this title, asked, What
are desire flags? I hadn't thought of it that way.
But if I can find some, I'll run them up the mast
S. O. S. What I desire is desire.
It was cloudy so we didn't bring bathing suits,
but late in the afternoon the sun comes out
and it's pleasant, so we have lunch and go
walking along the boardwalk. I stand with Hersch
leaning at the railing and watch sea gulls
and people on the uncrowded beach, some people more
than others: a pair of lovers their nearly naked bodies
sunwarmed folded together they hold a kiss it seems for hours
submerged like fish never coming up for air, a couple walking
along the water's edge the woman has long black hair
she holds a hand up near her face to keep the hair from blowing in
her eyes she wears a thin dress over a bathing suit the dress
fluttering and clinging about her legs. I say to Hersch, do you still
have desire?-- not a direct quote we spoke shall I say
more "colloquially"-- and he says he hasn't thought
much about it and I say if you don't think about it
then you don't have it and if you have to think about it
then you don't have it either. And he says,
I guess it's just a state of mind.
And I say, Beaches. Beaches are a state of mind.
