A Fable

I am horse.
I smell far off the battle
hear the thunder and commotion
the captains shouting and the howling
wounded. I laugh! Haha!
I race across the plain. The earth
shakes with the pounding of a thousand hooves.
I leap headlong into the fray.

I am wild ass.
My house is the wilderness
far from the tumult of cities.
The eagle and hawk soar above me
I have not known the rein
the flog, cursing of drivers.
I graze in a land of salt, in sweet
mountain pastures
