Give a yell!
Give a yell!
Give a good substantial yell!
And when we yell, we yell like hell
And this is what we yell--
Ala Kazoo Kazoo Kazam
Ikey Mikey Jake and Sam
We are the boys who eat no HAM!
We play baseball football soccer
We keep MATZOHS in our locker!
Ay Yi, Ay Yi, WEEQUAHIC HIGH. *
* Oh, well, that's how I remember it-- Weequahic High School, Newark, New Jersey, ca. 1942. A version of this cheer appears in Philip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint. Through Roth's novels the school and the Weequahic section of Newark have been canonized in American literature. Here's a link to
"Philip Roth Shakes Weequahic High" New York Times 2/28/69.If you're a Roth fan, here's "Goodbye, Brenda Patimkin," the sequel to Goodbye, Columbus, 30 years later. I think it's a howler, but then I wrote it.
And if you're a one time Newarker who migrated to Bradley beach in the summer, there's my memoir "Epitaphs."
Were you in the class of '42? Give a buzz.
And now for some NOSTALGIA. Some great pics from those good old days.
