* Oh, well, that's how I remember it-- Weequahic High School, Newark, New Jersey, ca. 1942. A version of this cheer appears in Philip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint. Through Roth's novels the school and the Weequahic section of Newark have been canonized in American literature. Here's a link to "Philip Roth Shakes Weequahic High" New York Times 2/28/69.

If you're a Roth fan, here's "Goodbye, Brenda Patimkin," the sequel to Goodbye, Columbus, 30 years later. I think it's a howler, but then I wrote it.
