The time involved in creating a portrait varies widely with the style and scale of the finished piece. Although each portrait has unique requirements, the process generally incorporates the following steps.
Client Discussion
An initial discussion establishes general guidelines as to subject, style, setting, size, anticipated delivery, and price. Once these have been outlined, a sitting is scheduled. This can be at the artist's studio, or at the sitter's location.

Sittings and Completion Schedule
To accommodate the schedules of busy subjects, most paintings are done from a combination of life study and reference photography. This requires at least one sitting of several hours. Large works, or those with elaborate detail, or multiple figures may require additional sittings. Completion of an oil painting generally requires several months following the initial sitting.
Price Guidelines
Actual quotes are determined individually for each portrait, but the following can be used as guidelines for unframed oil portraits of a single subject with a plain background. In general, detailed backgrounds or additional figures will increase the price by 50-70%.

Head or Head and Shoulders 14" x 18" - 16" x 20" $1,500
Half or 2/3 Length 20" x 24" - 24" x 36" $2,500
Full Length 30" x 40" and up $3,500

Sizes are approximate and reflect the figure represented at 2/3 to life size. Applicable taxes, framing, shipping and other expenses are additional. Graphite portraits are generally done in conjunction with oil portraits, but may also be commissioned separately.
