The Ship

The U.S.S. Kearny earned three Battle Stars on the European-African-Middle Eastern Area Service Medal for participation in the following operations:

North African Occupation
Algeria-Morrocco Landings / 8 to 11 November 1942

West Coast of Italy Operations / 1944
Bombardments of Formia-Anzio area / 12 t0 26 May 1944

Invasion of Southern France / 15 August to 25 September 1944

U.S.S. KEARNY also earned the Navy Occupation Servic Medal, Asia for the following periods:

14 September to 1 October 1945,
And 18 October to 29 October 1945.

The Crew

A.L. Danis, Commander, USN:
Awarded Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism as Commanding Officer of U.S.S. Kearny (DD-432) after that vessel was torpedoed on 17 October 1941.

Robert J. Esslinger, Lieutenant, USN:
Awarded Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism as Engineering Officer of U.S.S. Kearny (DD-432) after that vessel was torpedoed on 17 October 1941.

Auscie McDaniel, CMM(PA), USN:
Awarded Navy Cross and recommended for temporary appointment as Machinist for heroic conduct as Chief in Charge of the watch in the foreward engine room when the U.S.S. Kearny was torpedoed on 17 October 1941.

Lindsey Williamson, Commander, USN:
Awarded Silver Star for outstanding conduct as Commanding Officer of U.S.S. Kearny during Western Italy operations 11 May 1945.

Awarded Bronze Star for outstanding conduct as Commanding Officer of U.S.S. Kearny during invasion of Southern France 15 to 25 August 1945.

E.S. Sarsfield, Lieutenant, USN:
A letter of commendation for outstanding conduct as Executive Officer during torpedoing of U.S.S. Kearny on 17 October 1941

Reuben N. Perley, Jr., Ensign, USN:
A letter of commendation for outstanding conduct during torpedoing of U.S.S. Kearny on 17 October 1941.
