Subject:Survey of U.S.S. Kearny (DD-432)


1. The Sub-Board of Inspection and Survey, Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility, Orange, Texas, conducted a survey of Kearny (DD-432) during the period of 1 - 5 March 1971.

2. The board finds the Kearny is unfit for further service in that the repairs herein recommended and the cost of activation and modernization are disproportionate to the value of the ship for the service to which assigned.

3. The following costs substantiate the findings:

A. Replacement Cost.............................$36,400,000
B. Acquisition Cost..................................6,570,171
C. Modernization Cost.............................9,975,000
D. Activation Cost (Est.)..........................6,500,000
E. Repair Cost (Est.)................................4,200,000
F. Scrap Value (Est.)....................................85,000


4. In view of the above findings, the Board recommends:


A. That the Kearny (DD-432) be stricken from the Naval Vessel Register.

B. That all useaable equipments, as designated by the cognizant technical systems commands, be removed from the ship prior to disposal.

C. That she be disposed of in accordance with the laws and regulations prescribed for the disposal of Naval Ships.
