What is Russian Martial Art?

Russian Martial Art is the ancient martial wisdom of the Slavic peoples. It has been cultivated over centuries of conflict enciphered in Cossack and Russian Folk dance, Slavic Folklore and "Natural Laws".

RMA started as ritualized tribal combat and has been passed from one generation to the next for 10,000 years.  Generally, RMA has four phases of evolution, each phase corresponding to a new threat to Russian soil.  RMA was developed in RESPONSE to the invaders of the East, West, North and South, and is a UNIQUE system of martial art only known to the Slavs.

In the past century, RMA was outlawed in the former Soviet Union because it is much deeper than a mere combat system.  Being an "Integrated Cultural Philosophy," RMA was a danger to any oppressive artificial governing system.  RMA was taught to the elite combat subdivisions of the Russian Special Forces ("Spetsnaz").

With the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia began a large scale renovation of Russian native culture.  Included in this program was the rejuvenation of indigenous martial heritage of the Slavs.  General Alexander Ivanovich Retuinskih was made the leader of Russian movement and President of the All-Russian Federation of Russian Martial Art (which is endorsed and sanctioned by Russian Olympic Committee as the sole official representative of RMA within Russia and Worldwide).

General Retuinskih decided that the only way to preserve his culture was to share its beauty with the world, and as a result, began to screen candidates for the first foreign students of RMA.

After extensive and severe screening, Scott Sonnon (USA Sambo Team Coach and Trainer) was chosen as the first foreigner to be inducted into the noble lineage of RMA.  Mr. Sonnon was made the official North American representative of RMA in 1996.

Upon his return from Russia, Scott Sonnon began to teach the training he had received to his students in the United States. Scott Fabel was one of the very first students to train with Scott Sonnon in RMA.

In 1998, after only two years of training, Scott Fabel was also invited to train with the Russian Special Forces in St. Petersburg, Russia. There, he received his first level International Certification. He continues to travel to Russia regularly and conducts training nationally.

MU School RMA History

In the Spring of 1999, Scott Sonnon and Scott Fabel created our school in the hopes of sharing RMA with us at Millersville University.  Their generosity has given us the opportunity to share with our student body this rare and unique cultural martial legacy.

We are proud to say that we are the first American collegiate level program of Russian Martial Art.  We beat the Russian Martial Art Schools at Dickinson College and Eastern College by 4 months!

Class Content
What do we do?

Russian Martial Art is an exercise in Biomechanical Efficiency. In class we are working on the elementary biomechanical exercises of the ROSS Training System of Russian Martial Art.

The training is spread across 4 major directions of the ROSS Training System:

Close-Quarters Hand-to-Hand Combat

Renovated Jacket Grappling

Bayonet Fencing and Weapons

Russian Fisticuffs

Each semester focuses on one of these aspect of training. Each component is interwoven with the others and makes a complete martial system. Testing is done twice per semester and all students who choose to test receive a RMA University Level Certificate.

Training is very challenging, but is open to anyone with a willing desire to improve their quality of life.  ROSS is for everyone that has the "courage to change that which they must, the strength to accept that which they cannot, and the wisdom to know the difference."

Instead of learning "techniques," we learn principles of life through the vehicle of combat:

  • Grace vs Strength
  • Plasticity vs Flexibility
  • Efficiency vs Effectiveness
  • Improvisation vs Replication
  • Response vs Reaction
  • Adaptation vs Alteration
  • Decomposition vs Opposition
  • Community Sense vs Isolationism
  • Suppleness vs Rigidity
  • Renovation of universal principles vs Innovation (avoiding "remaking the wheel")
