BLS WEEK 8: Last Licks Before Playoffs

Division 1

1st Grade Boys

The Dynamo and Red Bulls battled to a scoreless tie. Gunner Skammel led the deepest charges for the Orange Engines while Tommy Davey did the same for the Bulls. Brian Yorke and Tanner Diamond kept net for the Bulls and Dynamo respectively. The Fire and Galaxy also closed their seasons with a 0-0 set.

1st Grade Girls

The Dynamo and Red Bulls tied 2-2. Viviana Moore and Lucy O’Brien scored for the Bulls. Grace Murray and Maggie Wallace, with an assist by Emily Harkins, scored for the Dynamo. Paige O’Neill, Cecelia Agoglia, Molly Green and Rachel Reder alternated on throw-ins and Goal Kicks for the Orange. The Dynamo played a second tie-ending game in Week 8. Goalie Danielle Stamos (2 saves) matched the Galaxy’s Shannon Davey (1 save) for a scoreless 1st half. Jessica Mulholland, Johanna Schilling and Diane Erhard continued the trend for their teams in the 2nd. Galaxy field marshal Makayla McLaren rallied teammates Sammy Ostrander, Annie McManus and Kaylie Aiken to position for possession. Veteran sub Kelly Erhard showed good sportsmanship with a long watch on defense and a friendly romp at Forward. The Galaxy also played another game this week, winning 1-0 over the Fire.

Division 2

2nd & 3rd Grade Girls

Inanimate goalposts should be impartial. But with 2 bounces out and 1 bang in, all favoring the Sounders, you wonder whose side the northern Field 4 frame was on. Galaxy forward Noelle Carey chipped an indirect free kick onto the near-post that Sounder Goalie Shaunie Smith quickly halted. Then a handling foul near that same post initiated a Penalty Kick by Caitlin Mullin that swerved off the other pipe. The fickle frame finally took kindly to being plunked, deflecting Sounder Striker Kaysea Jenkusky’s arching two-story punt netward. After a pair of loose shoe interludes, Noelle set up the tie, belting an SOG that rebounded far enough off the Sounder Keeper for Caitlin to skip home. Gal-goalies Kiera Price (2 saves) and Molly Burns (1 save) oversaw timely tackling from Kathleen Schmitt, Annie Burns and Lauren Dean. Attacking midfielders Katie Roventini, Kelly Erhard and Beth Dunn compelled quick recovery to offense. Speedsters Mollie Abernethy and Kathleen Walker converted GKs into upfield threats working Sounder Netminder Caroline Gifford for 6 saves. Scrappy Lime-shirts Sadie Saunter, Brooke Leahy and Heather O’Neill shut down busy lanes, freeing groundshakers Sabrina McCarthy, Kaylie Walsh and Juliana Moule to rally an energetic Sounder opposition in the 1-1 draw.

The Red Bulls outscored the Dynamo in their regular season ender. The Fire downed the Crew by two.

2nd & 3rd Grade Boys

The Red Bulls and Galaxy capped their seasons with a 2-2 tie. One field over, the Fire and Sounders agreed overtime would decide their game. Nearly a full period later, the Fire pulled ahead 2-1.

Division 3

4th & 5th Grade Boys

Galaxy Goalies Anthony Cimino and Connor Baldwin kept quiet watch tallying 3 saves between them in a 2-0 shutout of the Fire. The Galaxy nabbed both scores in the first half and kept the Fire defending the rocket-side net in the second. Forward Jag Guidarelli coupled quick hustle and flashy stopturns to rack the first score. He then led a pair of Fire tacklers down the left sideline, past the penalty box corner, to suddenly hook a center feed through the shifting Fire backfield. Connor, off-the-shoulder of Fire Fullback Brian Keane, deftly escaped his mark to take the pass and crack the second score. Aidan Smith sustained the shot-chocked Galaxy attack while rookie call-up Dean Hanrahan proved game-ready assisting on defense. Mainstay Galaxy Fullbacks David Hanrahan, Jack Mullallly, Aidan O’Connor and Nathan Reder let no goals through in their final three regular season games. Mr. Keane and Fire teammate Frank Oliva will test that D-line again in Playoff Round 1.

Division 4

6th – 8th Grade Boys

The LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire ended the regular season with a nail biter. The Fire's Jimmy Howard started it, feeding a lead pass to George Baroudos who broke through the defense and found the net’s left corner. Galaxian Kyle Hoffman answered with a blast from the 18. Ryan Hoffman supplied leadership on the field along with Luke Gersh on the Galaxy’s next score. Danny Lynch cleared the sphere out of the 18 to find James Munson up the sidelines. James crossed the ball to Ryan who in turn crossed it into the goal box onto the foot of Gersh for the finish. The Fire’s Gregory Fillinger ignited the following rally, directing a strong throw-in to Max Frankel who spotted Baroudos for his second goal. Tied 2-2, Eric Potter, spectacular on the front line, gave a square pass to Kyle, who dished it off to brother Ryan, who then found Matt LaSorsa inside the 18 for the capper into the left corner. Christian Lanzetta put the gloves on for LA, stopping a penalty shot and thinking quick in goal. Jack Watt took over in the second doing a fine job clearing the ball. Connor Leary had a great game at midfield for the Fire, contributing to Baroudos’ third goal of the day. With 10 minutes left, Kyle topped off LA’s 4th goal. Would the lead last? With Ryan out of the game, the Fire drive alive and kicking, Striker Frankel was seconds away from tying it. But time did run out and LA won 4-3.

Players’ Corner

While her mom coached 2 games simultaneously, 2nd Grader Emma Davey helped the Fire to a 2-0 win in their last game before the playoffs:

Did you score a goal? Emma: No, but I came close. I scored in the first game of the season. Catherine (Young) and Shannon (Neiswenter) scored.

What position do you like to play? Emma: I love Forward.

You play the Sounders in the playoffs, how do you beat them? Emma: We pass to each other and kick into the goal.

Who do you look to pass to? Emma: Sydney Colleran, Catherine and Shannon.

What’s your favorite food after the game? Emma: I eat lollipops after.

Emma and 1st Grade Galaxian Shannon Davey then joined their Coach (who opened Mother’s Day weekend with a win and a tie.)

Thanks Emma!
