Vergil: Book I

1. She had heard that a race was arising from Trojan blood which would destroy Carthage in

the future. She was still upset about losing the Judgment of Paris to Venus. She was upset

that her daughter Ganymede did not get to be cupbearer to the gods. Hebe, a Trojan, got it

instead.

2. Juno goes to Aeolus, king of the winds, and asks him to release a storm on Aeneas' ships

as they pass by his island of Aeolia. To get him to agree, Juno offers Aeolus her most beautiful

nymph Deiopeia to be his wife. Aeolus accepts and sends the winds. Aeneas' fleet is almost

destroyed until Neptune, god of the sea, surfaces and stops the storm. He chases the winds

home and inadvertantly saves Aeneas because he was upset that no one had asked his

permission to disturb his ocean.

3. Jupiter

4. Dido was the queen of Tyre. Sychaeus was her husband and the king. Pygmalion, Dido's

brother, in order to take over the kingdom of Tyre, killed Dido's husband Sychaeus, but Dido

escaped him and took some of the town's treasure with her. Dido and her followers sailed to

the new town of Carthage, which they were in the process of building when Aeneas arrived.

She was always afraid her brother Pygmalion would come after her to get the treasure. He

never did. He became the new king of Tyre. The memory of her first husband, Sychaeus,

whom she had dearly loved, haunted her when she was contemplating an affair with Aeneas.

5. Jupiter had sent Mercury to remove all hostile feelings toward strangers from the people of

Carthage, and Venus had placed a cloak of invisibility around Aeneas and Achates.

6. Scenes from the Trojan War. ( It has been 7 years since the war ended and stories of what

happened there had spread as far away as Carthage.)

7. A. Fix the ships and sail toward Italy.

B. Fix the ships and sail back to Crete to live with King Acestes,

a former Trojan who also escaped the war.

C. Stay there and live with Dido and her Carthaginians.

8. Venus disguises her son Cupid to look just like Ascanius, Aeneas' son, and makes a switch.

The real Ascanius is drugged and taken to stay on

Mt. Ida, while Achates unknowingly takes Cupid, disguised to look like Ascanius, to Queen

Dido's banquet. There Cupid sits on Dido's lap and breathes love for Aeneas into Dido. No

one knows he is not Ascanius.
