Vergil: Book XII

 

1. Latinus Amata

3. If Aeneas wins, he promises not to enslave the Latins, but become

one with them. If Aeneas loses, the Trojans leave and never bother the

Latins again.

 

4. 1) She encourages the men to break the peace and attack the

Trojans. 2) She sends an omen from the sky that tells the Rutulians to

attack and save Turnus. An eagle (Aeneas) swoops down and seizes a

swan (Turnus) and tries to carry it off. The other birds (the Rutulians)

harass the eagle until it drops the swan and flies away.

 

5. Tolumnius, the augur who interpreted the omen as good, throws

first.

 

6. Aeneas is shot in the leg by an arrow.

 

7. No one claimed to have done it.

 

8. Turnus sees an opportunity and races into battle killing many

Trojans.

 

9. Iapyx, the doctor and Venus, his mother

 

10. dittany (downy leaves and scarlet flowers)

 

11. fear

 

12. He is pushed off the racing chariot by Juturna so she can drive

Turnus.

 

13. She drives him away from Aeneas at every turn.

 

14. Messapus

 

15. Venus

 

16. He recognizes that his sister has been protecting him, which he

abhors, and he sees Aeneas in possession of his town, a fact that

caused Queen Amata to hang herself.

 

17. Juturna furnishes Turnus with another sword to replace the one he

broke, and Venus gets Aeneas' spear unstuck from an old oak stump for him.

 

18. Jupiter and Juno

 

19. Juno wants the Latins to keep their name, customs, language, etc.

and not become Trojans. Jupiter agrees and says the Trojans will

slowly become Latins.

 

20. Aeneas sees Turnus wearing the sword belt he took from Aeneas'

good friend Pallas when he killed him in Book X. I told you Turnus made a mistake. If not

for that belt, Aeneas would have spared him. Instead

he kills him in the name of Pallas. End of Story!
