Vergil: Book IV

1. Anna is Dido's sister.

2. Don't live alone. Don't miss out on children. Don't miss out on

the joys of Venus(sex). Your dead husband's ashes don't care about

this. You rejected all the unwelcome neighboring kings, don't reject a

welcome love. Aeneas' men will be our protection from the Gaetulians,

the Numidians, the Barcae, and Pygmalion, if he finds us. Juno must

have sent them. What a great city Carthage will become with Tyrians

joined with Trojans.

3. Dido is compared to a deer, shot by a hunter's arrow, but not

killed immediately.

4. All construction of the city stopped.

5. Dido and Aeneas will go hunting. Juno will cause a thunderstorm to

come and the hunting party will scatter. Dido and Aeneas will seek

shelter from the rain in the same cave. They will think of something

to do while waiting for the storm to end.

6. The real purpose was to keep Aeneas and his men from leaving and

reaching Italy.

7. Apollo

8. A thunderstorm causes Dido and Aeneas to go to the same cave.

9. Dido and Aeneas take off their wet clothes and make passionate

love. Dido calls it marriage, but no formal ceremony is performed.

Aeneas probably thinks what great luck he is having. He does not think

they are married. Later in the book he tells her point blank that he

never had a wedding ceremony with her.

10. Each feather on the monstrous bird Rumor has an eye to see gossip,

and ear to hear gossip, and a mouth and a tongue to spread the gossip.

11. Iarbas is upset because Dido has chosen the foreigner Aeneas. He

had asked her to marry him several times, and although she said no, he

had not given up hope that she would change her mind.

12. Ascanius, his son

13. Dido finds out first from Rumor.

14. The pain of Aeneas' leaving could be eased if she had a child, a

little Aeneas, to care for when the real Aeneas was gone.

15. Aeneas blames the gods.

16. Dido swoons(faints) and has to be carried to her bed chamber.

17. Aeneas' men preparing to leave look like ants.

18. Anna goes to Aeneas pleading for him to stay. Dido blames her for

encouraging her love of Aeneas, and Anna feels guilty and is

desperately trying to make things right.

19. Dido tells Anna she will burn the things Aeneas left behind on the

pyre.

20. Dido could stay and marry a local king like Iarbas, she could

leave Carthage and follow after Aeneas, or she could die.

21. Anna

22. Dido's curse on Aeneas is that he will suffer in war, be killed

before his time, and lie unburied in the sand.

23. The Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage

24. A Trojan dagger, presumably left there by Aeneas.

25. Juno sent Iris, goddess of the rainbow, down to cut off a lock of

Dido's hair so that her spirit could enter the underworld. Dido

committed suicide, and suicides were not allowed to enter the

underworld.
