Vergil: Book IX

2. Stay inside the walls and hold the camp.

 

3. He tries to burn their ships.

 

4. The ships are made of "holy pine" given to Aeneas by Rhea, mother

of Jove. She will not permit them to be destroyed. She turns them into

sea nymphs and they swim away.

 

5. Nisus and Euryalus

 

6. The plan is to kill as many drunken, sleeping Rutulians as possible

while slipping past their camp in the darkness.

 

7. The Rutulians see the moonlight reflecting off Euryalus' helmet.

 

8. Euryalus is caught and stabbed with a sword by Volcens, a Rutulian

captain. Nisus tries to rescue him, but he is cut down by many

Rutulian swords, but not before he kills Volcens.

 

9. Their heads are cut off, placed on spears, and paraded before the

eyes of the Trojans.

 

10. Euryalus' mother wants to die.

 

11. She wants the Rutulians to kill her or Jove with his thunderbolt.

 

12. Ascanius

 

13. He killed Remulus with an arrow for taunting the Trojans.

 

14. Apollo

 

15. Turnus

 

16. Mnestheus makes an inspirational speech and the Trojans band

together and rally.

 

17. Turnus jumps into the Tiber River and floats away.

 

18. Turnus takes his sword and cuts Pandarus' head in two, right down

the middle. Then it describes the split head hanging there still

attached, the pieces leaning left and right.
