Role Model of the Week...

Elizabeth Fedde, deaconess, 1921 Fedde was born in Norway and trained as a deaconess. In 1882, at the age of 32, she was asked to come to New York to minister to the poor and to Norwegian seamen. Her influence was wide-ranging, and she established the Deaconess House in Brooklyn and the Deaconess House and Hospital of the Lutheran Free Church in Minneapolis. She returned home to Norway in 1885 and died there.

Watchword for the Week...

O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! Psalm 95:6

Exodus 17:1-7; Psalm 95
Romans 5:1-11; John 4:5-42

Be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God. Joel 2:23

Rejoice in the Lord! Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Philippians 4:4,5

God of peace, help us to express our inner joy through an outward life of gentleness and love. May the world understand our lack of anxiety and worry as evidence of confidence in Christ Jesus to provide all we need. Amen.

Today's Thought...

“SALVATION FOR THE SOUL”

“When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.”

- Mark 6:34

It was past dinner time. They were hungry. What kept that crowd spellbound so long that day in the wilderness? Perhaps not all had come for the right reason. Perhaps not all would go home with the right answers. But Jesus had offered rich food for their souls. His heart, seeing what the crowd really needed, spoke to them about forgiveness and peace, rest and heaven.

Even his miracle that day was designed for their souls. By multiplying the loaves and fishes, he wanted to point them to the greater miracle, how he as the Savior was the only bread that could feed their souls. Some were fed and satisfied that day. Others went home still hungry, though they had dined on miracle loaves and fishes.

When I sit at the Savior’s feet, as the crowd did that day, for what am I hungry? Do I think of him the way the anonymous poet did who wrote: “My Master was so very poor, a manger was his cradling place. So very rich my Master was, kings came from far to gain his grace. My Master was so very poor and with the poor he broke the bread. So very rich my Master was that multitudes by him were fed. My Master was so very poor they nailed him naked to a cross. So very rich my Master was, he gave his all and knew no loss”? But oh, the gain when my soul is fed by him!

Feed me, Bread of Heaven, and my soul will be satisfied. Amen.

Prayer of the week

Merciful God, the fountain of living water, you quench our thirst and wash away our sin. Give us this water always. Bring us to drink from the well that flows with the beauty of your truth through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
