Vermont Chapter Artist-of-the-Year Recital and Annual Meeting

Our Artist-of-the-Year, Karen Miller, will present a recital at the Stowe Community Church on May 4 at 4 p.m. This will be followed by a reception and our Vermont AGO Chapter annual meeting. Then, those wishing to dine in the Stowe area before traveling home are welcome to join other Vermont AGO members for dinner at a local eatery. Results of balloting will also be available at the annual meeting. The Stowe Community Church is the large white church on Main Street. Parking is on the street or on side streets close by or at the recreational path parking lot behind the church.

Included in this newsletter is the ballot for Chapter officers. Please fill them out and send them to your newsletter editor for tallying. Again, we extend a HUGE thank you to Marilyn Polson for contacting people and completing our slate of willing officers.

While you are thinking of balloting, national members also have a ballot in the April issue of TAO to complete. The instructions are in the magazine, and the national organization appreciates your efforts to be involved in this selection process as well.

Our Vermont Chapter mourns the loss of a former member, Eleanor J. Lawrence, who was organist for the Methodist Church in Bennington for several years, and then director of music at the First United Methodist Church in Shaftsbury for 42 years. She was honored for her long-time commitment to the Shaftsbury Church in 2003 with the choir loft being dedicated to her. Active in the Church Women United at the national, state, and local levels, she received the Valiant Woman Award of the Bennington Vermont Unit of Church Women United for 34 years of service.

Coming Events

On Sunday, April 6 at 4 p.m., Lynnette Combs will give a recital of organ music by French composers at the Stowe Community Church in Stowe. She will perform works by Jehan Alain, Vierne, Messiaen and others. Admission is by donation. This recital will also be given in Barre on May 25 and in Bennington on June 1. The Social Band of Burlington will offer a spring concert titled Songs of Work on Saturday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Burlington Unitarian Church and on Sunday, April 6 at the East Craftsbury Presbyterian Church at 6:30 p.m. A singing workshop will also be offered in East Craftsbury 3:00 - 5:00 before that concert.

The Northeast Kingdom Chorus will present its spring concert on Saturday, April 5 at 7 p.m. at the East Craftsbary Presbyterian Church and on Sunday, April 6 at 4 p.m. at the Greensboro United Church of Christ. John Weaver is the director of the chorus, and the program includes Mendelssohn's HYMNE - Hear My Prayer and Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs as well as shorter selections, some of which are compositions or arrangements by John Weaver.

St. Denis Church, Hanover, NH is sponsoring a Spring Vocal Program on Sunday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m. Featured performers are Jennifer Hansen, mezzo soprano, Emily Cassidy, alto, Rebecca Rotello, soprano, Maria Lamson, alto, Dan Falcone, baritone, and Mary Holley, piano. Repertoire will include works of Bach, Faure, Mozart, Delibes, and Dvorak as well as secular selections. A free will offering will be received. A reception to meet the artist will follow in the parish hall. For additional information, call the St. Denis office at (603) 643-9881.

The Freelance Family Singers, the Woodstock area community chorus, will hold its 30th Anniversary celebration concerts on Saturday, May 3 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 4 at 3 p.m. in the First Congregational Church, Elm Street, Woodstock. These concerts will include music for the full chorus, a guest appearance by the University Chorus of the Upper Valley, and performances by vocal and instrumental ensembles. The concerts are free with donations of non-perishable items for the community Food Shelf suggested; refreshments will be served. The director of Freelance is Ellen Satterthwaite. Organist (Choir Director) Positions Available

The First Baptist Church of Burlington, VT is seeking a new chancel Choir Director (adult). The choir is an enthusiastic and experienced group of 18 - 22 covering SATB and rehearses weekly on Thursdays, 7 - 8:30 p.m. The choir sings every Sunday from Sept. - mid-June and for special services (Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, etc.). The Director would work closely with the Organist and Director of Music, Dr. Susan Summerfield, and other church small ensembles. The organ is the 1864 E. & G. G. Hook tracker, restored in 1996. The Charlotte Congregational Church, UCC will be in need of an organist as of early March 2008. This person will be needed to provide music planned in conjunction with the Pastor and Music Director for worship services two Sunday mornings a month for a congregation of about 100 people. Services are at 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. A stipend of $125.00 for each service is offered. The organ is a two manual, tubular pneumatic action instrument built by Estey in 1925. Ascension Lutheran Church needs an organist to play the organ and/or keyboard at all regular church services and special services and oversee organ maintenance. The successful candidate would be a Lutheran or one who is willing to learn the Lutheran traditions and liturgy. The church organist is responsible to Pastor Nancy Wright with oversight from the Worship and Music Committee. Please contact the pastor at the church. Community Lutheran Church in South Burlington, a liturgical congregation, seeks an organist to play traditional and more recent music and direct the adult choir three Sundays per month plus seasonal services. An organist is needed for the West Lebanon Congregational Church, West Lebanon, New Hampshire. The organist accompanies the choir (but does not direct the choir). There is one Sunday, 10:00 a.m., service with choir rehearsal at 8:30 a.m. There is no mid-week choir rehearsal. It is a two manual tracker organ, that was fully re-conditioned in 2000. St. James Episcopal Church in Laconia, NH is searching for a new musician to lead the church's music ministry. The church was founded in 1862 and currently has 120 families/individuals in its membership. Their music director position includes playing for Sunday services, directing one adult choir (September through June), and playing for some holiday and Holy Week services. Salary is $6,000. They are seeking a musician who can empower both the choir and congregation to sing, explore, and enjoy music in the Episcopal/Anglican tradition. The deadline for the May issue of Pipe Notes will be April 20. If you have spring events to share, please send them to your newsletter editor soon so others can enjoy the events in your area, too. And its not to early to think about summer events and getting them announced in the newsletter so members can save the dates on their calendars.
