First steps to take when your cat is diagnosed.

We cannot stress enough the importance to consult with a specialist!

On our files page we have a list of oncologists’ websites - the file is called: "Oncologists' websites.txt" (we aren’t recommending particular oncologists, only providing a list).  You can do a search for specialists near you (oncologists, internists, etc) on the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine site. You can search for an oncologist in your location on the The Perseus Foundation's website. Search for Alternative Medicine Practioners at the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association or AltVetMed website.

If you just found out that your cat has been diagnosed with cancer, you should read Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialist's "Rules of Road for Managing the cancer patient".

Questions to ask your cat's vet/oncologist:

What is my cat's diagnosis and what stage is the disease?
What treatments are available and appropriate for this diagnosis?
What are the cure/remission rates for this treatment?  What results do you expect?
Are there any alternatives?
What are the side effects of this treatment? How can they be minimized? What would be considered an "emergency" or abnormal side effect which would require a trip to the vet or emergency clinic? What is considered a normal side effect?
What are the costs for treatments?
If the cost is prohibitively high for my situation, would I be able to make any financial arrangements?
Should anything be avoided during or after treatment? Type of foods? Supplements? Sunlight?
What supplements can be given to support the immune system?
How long is the course of treatment?
How often does my cat receive treatment; how much time will each treatment take?
How will we know if the treatment is working?
How will my cat be monitored during treatment?
Are there clinical trials available?  Do you recommend a clinical trial for my cat?
Could the treatment cause a secondary problem (heart, lung, or kidney damage)?
How long will my cat's recuperation be?
Will I need to make any special arrangements for my cat when they get home (special crate, litter box, food)?
