Jewish Historical Society of North Jersey
The Jewish Historical Society of North Jersey has completed its move to the Barnert Medical Arts Complex in Paterson and is looking for skilled volunteers, including an archivist, to help sort its vast store of Judaic material.
Jerry Nathans, who says he's been holding the society together as its president, finally has decided to move the collection out of his apartment, to the old Barnert Hospital.
The YM-YHWA in Wayne, New Jersey was the society's original home until it ran out of space. Material was packed in 300 boxes and stored in diverse locations. Until recently, the boxes were at William Paterson University and inaccessible to the public. "From Yiddish books printed in Paterson to wall hangings found on the streets of that city, the collection offers a unique look at local Jewish history," says Jerry Nathans, president of the group, who notes that the society is looking to create a new board of directors. The long-range goal of the group is to establish a local Jewish heritage center for exhibits and research open to students, scholars, and other interested persons.
Our society would like to work closely with Mr. Nathans. If you can help, please contact Jerry Nathans at JHSNNJ@yahoo.com

Do A Mitzvah
Alice Gould volunteers much of her time to coordinate a project to index all the headstones in the Newark Jewish cemeteries. The information is made available to researchers all over the world. There are now over 25,000 entries in the computer data. If you can assist us in this wonderful mitzvah, contact Alice at (973) 575-8875 or ARGould21@aol.com
Our own member has been immortalized. In the October 15, 2000 edition of the New York Times, NJ Section, Alice's photo appeared with an article about the Newark cemeteries.

Great News!
Congratulations to Alice Gould on the publishing of her book, The Old Jewish Cemeteries of Newark. Check the Avotaynu web site (link below) for more information.
