SOMERSET: The Eagle bats were as hot
as the shining sun on Thursday afternoon as Somerset defeated Cambria Heights
14-4 in the home opener.
Cambria
Heights opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. They took advantage of some early wildness
of Somerset’s starter Drew
Shaulis. Shaulis hit a batter and
walked three men in the inning. The inning
ended with a 4-6-3 double play turned by Adam
Angermeier and Jordan
Kaufman.
Somerset
tied it up in the bottom of the inning when Zach
Deist singled and scored on a groundout by Josh
Barron.
Somerset
opened up a 4-1 lead in the third when Shaulis doubled and scored on a double
by Tyler
Uphouse. Uphouse then scored on
Angermeier’s second homerun in as many games.
Somerset
chased Height’s starter John Fees in the fourth when they scored two runs on
two walks and a costly fielding error.
Meanwhile,
Shaulis settled down from his early wildness to throw four hitless innings to
earn the victory. He was relieved in
the fifth by Tyler
Hayman. Hayman, in his Varsity
debut, allowed three runs on three hits and three walks.
Somerset
increased their lead to 9-4 in the fifth with three runs on one hit. Barron had
the only hit in the inning.
Somerset
scored the final five runs of the game in the sixth. Angermeier, Barron, Alex
Minnick, and John
Heiple all singled in the inning.
The game ended after Heiple’s single due to the 10-run rule.
Somerset
(2-0) will travel to Bedford
on Tuesday for a 4:30 game.
