EBENSBURG: The Somerset Eagles opened
the 2006 season with a 10-4 victory over their Laurel Highlands rival Central
Cambria.
The
Eagles bolted out to a 2-0 first inning lead when Senior Adam
Angermeier drilled a 1-1 pitch from Mike Damin over the left field
fence. Tyler
Uphouse, who doubled to left with two outs in the inning, also scored on
the homerun.
Somerset
added a run in the third when Tyler
Ferry reached on an error to open the inning. He stole second and scored on a single to left by Andy
Harvey.
Meanwhile,
Angermeier
held Central Cambria off the board for the first 3 1/3 innings. He only allowed two hits while striking out
seven. Landon
Wahl came on with one out in the fourth and two men on base. He induced an infield pop-up by Matt
Cornetti before striking out the final batter of the inning.
Somerset
increased the lead to 5-0 in the fifth when Ferry walked to lead off the
inning. After Uphouse singled, Ferry
scored on a single by Angermeier.
Uphouse then scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Zach
Deist.
In
the bottom of the fifth inning, Central Cambria closed the gap to 5-3 when Eric
Nelisnick ripped a Wahl fastball over the center field fence for a three run
homerun. With two outs in the inning, Drew
Shaulis came on to strike out Dan Berzonsky to preserve the Somerset lead
of 5-3.
Somerset
responded with five more runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Alex
Lenhart, Shaulis,
Ferry, Angermeier, and Uphouse had consecutive hits, and Deist added a
sacrifice fly.
Wahl
earned the victory while Shaulis was credited with the save. Angermeier (4 RBI’s) and Uphouse (3 runs
scored) each had three hits for the Eagles.
Central
Cambria scored the final run of the game in the sixth off of Shaulis when
Cornetti singled and scored on a bases loaded walk to Scott Beck.
Somerset
(1-0) will host Cambria
Heights in the home opener on Thursday at 4:00.
