SOMERSET: Junior lefthander Drew
Shaulis turned in a stellar performance to lead the Eagles to an 8-6
victory over non-league opponent Clearfield on Saturday afternoon. While effectively changing speeds, Shaulis
recorded 17 strikeouts while only walking one batter. He allowed six runs on eleven hits in tossing the complete game.
Somerset
jumped out to a 6-0 first inning lead.
After the first two batters were retired by Andrew Janocko, the next
eight Eagle batters reached. The Eagles
pounded out six singles and took advantage of two walks. Alex
Lenhart delivered a bases-loaded single to drive in two runs in the inning. Clearfield brought on Brandon Evans to close
out the inning.
In
the third, Clearfield cut the Somerset lead in half. First baseman Shane Davis doubled and third baseman James
Zimmerman homered in the inning.
Somerset
answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning when Andy
Harvey tripled to center and scored on a groundout by Shaulis.
Clearfield
narrowed the margin in the fifth with two more runs. Once again, however, Somerset responded in their half of the
inning. Josh
Barron doubled to lead off the inning, and he scored on a two-out single to
right by Lenhart. Somerset lead 8-5
going to the seventh inning.
After
one out in the seventh, Shaulis walked Zimmerman. Adam Jury then doubled and DH Kurt Miller singled to score
Zimmerman. With the tying runs on base,
Shaulis retired the final two hitters of the game.
Somerset
(12-2) will host Johnstown
on Monday at 4:30.
