ROXBURY PARK II: The Somerset High
School Varsity Baseball Club captured the 400th victory in the
school’s history by defeating Johnstown 10-2 on Thursday.
Somerset
opened the scoring in the top of the first when Drew
Shaulis drilled Bobby Helman’s first pitch of the game to the wall in
left-center for a triple. Two pitches
later, Tyler
Ferry singled him home.
Somerset
added three more runs in the second when Andy
Harvey led off with a single, advanced to second on a throwing error, and
scored on a double by Jordan
Kaufman. Kaufman then scored on a
groundout by Alex
Lenhart. Shaulis scored the final run
of the inning when he doubled and crossed the plate due to a Johnstown fielding
error.
After
Johnstown scored a run in the bottom of the inning, Somerset countered with a
run in the third. Harvey doubled and
scored when Kaufman reached on a fielding error.
Meanwhile
Somerset’s starter, Adam
Angermeier held Johnstown to two runs over the first four innings. He allowed three hits and walked four to
earn his first victory of the season.
Somerset
put the game away in the fifth when Angermeier,
Zach
Deist, and Harvey singled to load the bases for Kaufman. Kaufman then drilled an 0-1 pitch from Nate
Pierce over the left centerfield fence for a grand slam. His first homerun of the season increased
Somerset’s lead to 9-2. Josh
Barron scored the final run of the game on a groundout by Ferry.
Shaulis
threw two perfect innings, and Landon
Wahl pitched a scoreless seventh to set the final at 10-2.
Shaulis
and Harvey led the Eagles with three hits each, and Kaufman drove in five for
the game.
Somerset
(3-0) will host Clearfield
on Saturday at 1:00 in a non-league game.
