Somerset Captures Win #400 By Defeating Johnstown 10-2

ROXBURY PARK II:  The Somerset High School Varsity Baseball Club captured the 400th victory in the school’s history by defeating Johnstown 10-2 on Thursday.

Somerset opened the scoring in the top of the first when Drew Shaulis drilled Bobby Helman’s first pitch of the game to the wall in left-center for a triple.  Two pitches later, Tyler Ferry singled him home.

Somerset added three more runs in the second when Andy Harvey led off with a single, advanced to second on a throwing error, and scored on a double by Jordan Kaufman.  Kaufman then scored on a groundout by Alex Lenhart.  Shaulis scored the final run of the inning when he doubled and crossed the plate due to a Johnstown fielding error.

After Johnstown scored a run in the bottom of the inning, Somerset countered with a run in the third.  Harvey doubled and scored when Kaufman reached on a fielding error.

Meanwhile Somerset’s starter, Adam Angermeier held Johnstown to two runs over the first four innings.  He allowed three hits and walked four to earn his first victory of the season.

Somerset put the game away in the fifth when Angermeier, Zach Deist, and Harvey singled to load the bases for Kaufman.  Kaufman then drilled an 0-1 pitch from Nate Pierce over the left centerfield fence for a grand slam.  His first homerun of the season increased Somerset’s lead to 9-2.  Josh Barron scored the final run of the game on a groundout by Ferry.

Shaulis threw two perfect innings, and Landon Wahl pitched a scoreless seventh to set the final at 10-2.

Shaulis and Harvey led the Eagles with three hits each, and Kaufman drove in five for the game.

Somerset (3-0) will host Clearfield on Saturday at 1:00 in a non-league game.
