Somerset Falls to Tyrone 15-3 in Five Innings

TYRONE:   The Somerset Eagles struggled in their first non-league contest of the year.  Four Somerset hurlers combined to walk ten batters, yield thirteen hits, and give up fifteen runs (fourteen runs were earned) over four innings of work.  Meanwhile, Somerset could only muster three hits off of Tyrone’s starter Tyler Golden.

Somerset jumped on the board in the top of the first thanks to Tyler Ferry’s single and stolen base.  Tyrone countered with a run in their half of the first off of Somerset’s starter Andy Harvey.

In the second, Zach Deist walked to open the inning.  He advanced to second when Josh Barron reached on catcher’s interference.  After Jimmy Harshbarger laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, Deist scored on a groundout by Alex Lenhart.

Somerset opened up a 3-1 lead in the third.  Tyler Uphouse was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Adam Angermeier’s double.  After Jordan Kaufman walked, Uphouse scored on a bases loaded walk to Barron.  This would be the final run that Somerset could manage off of Golden.

In the bottom of the third, Brinton Mingle homered, and Jamie Levinson doubled to chase Harvey.  Landon Wahl relieved, but he walked three batters before retiring the side.  Tyrone led 5-3 after three.

In the fourth, the Eagles fell apart.  Wahl and reliever Brett Hemminger combined to walk four, allow seven hits and ten runs.  Drew Shaulis allowed a single before retiring the final two batters he faced.  Somerset committed three errors in the inning.

The game was ended by the ten run rule after the Eagles failed to score in the fifth.

Somerset (5-1) will travel to Westmont on Monday at 4:30.
