Confirmation Sponsor Information
|
| A
Confirmation sponsor can be an invaluable assistant to parents in
sharing their faith with their child. Sponsors can be older adult
friends whom the Candidate can trust to be open, honest, caring, and
encouraging. Your sponsor can best help you if he/she is someone
whose Christian lifestyle you admire, someone with whom you feel
comfortable, and someone who has the time and willingness to be
involved with you throughout this process. The Catechism (#1311) and
Canon Law (#892-893) both tell us that a sponsor is needed. As
stated in The Rite of Confirmation, having one of your godparents
helps us to see how Baptism and Confirmation are connected; however,
this may not work well for you. You may no longer know your
godparents, or they may no longer be good role models. Maybe they
just live too far away or do not have enough time to make the
commitment. In any case, your sponsor is your choice and can be a
relative (other than a parent/guardian), friend, or someone from the
Church—someone who is active in the Church, can share why faith
is important to him/her, and who lives close enough to help you with
and be involved in your preparation.
