What is the Episcopal Church?

The Episcopal Church was founded by Jesus Christ and has its roots in the ancient catholic church of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It is a sacramental church and is served by a ministry of bishops, priests and deacons. The Bible is the center of Episcopal belief, along with tradition and common sense.

The Episcopal Church embodies the best of the catholic tradition, while at the same time draws on the benefits of a more democratic form of church government. George Washington, Franklin Roosevelt, Robert E. Lee and Fiorello LaGuardia were all members of this church.

The Church is catholic in its worship and practice, and professes the same faith as the early church. The central act of worship in the Episcopal Church is the Eucharist. Episcopalians confess Christ was sacrificed for all and we accept our responsibility as Christians to minister to the troubles of human society.

The Episcopal Church encourages all baptized Christians to receive Holy Communion, regardless of denomination, when attending an Episcopal Church.
