FINDING GOD IN ALL THINGS!

Welcome to our Grade 1-6  Religious Education Program!

I hope you find this page answers some of your questions about our program.

About our Curriculum…

We use “Finding God” published by Loyola Press. Not only is this curriculum theologically sound, it has a wonderfully dynamic approach for sharing our faith. Some of the key elements include:

  • An Invitation To Prayer. Which teaches children to the basic prayers we all need to know as well inviting them to experience other forms of prayer such as guided meditation.
  • An Introduction To The Communion Of Saints.  Children get to know a host of Saints and holy people who reflect both the church’s diversity as well as our universal call to holiness.
  • The Integration Of Catholic Social Teaching. Children learn that our faith does call us to concern for others  and should influence every aspect of our lives.
  • A Dedication to Reaching Children Through A Variety Of Learning Styles. There is beautiful art, music and story CDs, a variety of games, crafts and of course well written content, all geared towards bringing our children into a deeper relationship with God.

 The Role of Parents

The church teaches that parents are “the first heralds of the faith” for their children. It is through you that children first learn about the importance of God in their lives and through your loving example that they see their first model of sacrificial love. Finding God supports you in this important role as “first herald” of faith for your child thru.

  • Raising Faith-filled Kids a parent page: At the end of each student’s chapter there is a page designed for students to take home with them. On one side is the student's end of chapter summary and on the other is a parent page. This page has an adult summary of what your child learned in class, a dinner conversation starter,  suggestions for ways to reach out in service to others and more.
  • Parent Newsletters: Once every 4 to 6 weeks you will receive a Parent Newsletter in your family file, which features easy to read articles that touch your daily life and enrich your faith.  We usually include a note updating you on upcoming events in our program with the newsletter.
  • Each family new to the program receives a Family Guide to Prayer at the beginning of the year. This little booklet has all the prayers your child will need to learn by heart as well as helpful hints on praying as a family. Each week’s parent page will let you know what prayers we are currently learning in class. We encourage families to take the time during bedtime or mealtime to pray these prayers together until they are learned by heart.

Family Gatherings

During the year we offer opportunities for you to gather as a family to share faith. These gatherings will be an informal opportunity for those families who are interested to gather for a pot-luck meal, crafts or games and prayer and will be suitable for every member in your family to attend together. Watch for more details throughout the year!

To Snack or Not to Snack?

It has become our policy not to offer regular snacks in class. However we do realize that occasionally students who attend on weekdays have had an early lunch at school and really may need a snack. Weekday students may bring their own snack 15 minutes before class and go to the Parish Hall to eat before class begins.

From time to time classes may hold a special celebration that includes a snack and teachers will notify families ahead of time so you know what to expect.

Themes Covered in “Finding God”

Each year students will revisit five overarching themes while progressing in a deeper understanding of each theme. These themes are God, Jesus, Church, Sacraments, and Morality. Students will explore these themes through a different age appropriate lens each year.

Grade One

Students are introduced to each of the persons of the Blessed Trinity, God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They learn how we can come to know Jesus through personal prayer and by worshiping God together especially in the celebration of the Eucharist. They learn how we can thank Jesus for the gift of himself by obeying the Commandments, caring for one another and caring for the world.

Grade Two

Students are reminded how much God loves us, that we are called to act on God’s love for us by loving one another, and living as Jesus wants us to live. Because this is the year that students often prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist there is special attention paid to these two sacraments.

Grade Three

Students learn that God created us for goodness and calls us to live in community. They learn what it means to be followers of Jesus and how Jesus draws us into a closer relationship with God the Father. They learn how the sacraments deepen our relationship with God and how the Theological virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity are the foundation for the moral choices we make as we grow to be like Jesus.

Grade Four

Students learn how God calls us to lead a moral life. They will focus on the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes as guides for living their lives for God and others.  Special attention is given to how the Sacraments of Healing and Service help us build the moral dimensions of our faith.

Grade Five

Students are reminded that we are better able to live like Jesus when we are strengthened by the sacramental life of the Church. They learn that through the sacraments we live more fully in the Holy Spirit as members of the Church, united in diversity under the magisterium.

Grade Six

Students explore the history of salvation - from creation through the Old Testament to its fulfillment in Jesus. They learn to recognize the importance of the prophets as witnesses for God and their relevance to our own time. They explore the importance of the psalms as the prayers that Jesus prayed. They learn how the Wisdom Literature offers practical advice for following God everyday. They come to appreciate the deep connection between the Passover and our celebration of the Eucharist.
