The Beaverton Hillsboro Science Exposition (BHSE) is Washington County's largest pre-college celebration of science. Held annually in February, the BHSE brings together nearly 250 students from more than 10 schools in the Beaverton and Hillsboro school districts to compete for scholarships, cash awards, and the grand prize: an all-expense paid trip to the 2006 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, NM. BHSE is very proud to have Intel, FEI, and Vernier Technology as sponsors of this challenging competition.
This year's event will be held Wednesday, February 19, 20089at Intel's Jones Farm campus. (Directions)
Judges wanted! We're always looking for scientists and engineers to spend a day helping high school researchers. If you can help judge contact one of the fair directors listed below.
o Make sure you get your teacher’s approval and any necessary SRC/IRC approval BEFORE beginning any experimentation!
o The Student Handbook is a great place to start planning your project.
o Use the Rules Wizard to help define what rules and regulations you need to be certain you know and follow.
o Register your projects at NWSE under the BHSE listing
Now is the time to plan. Brainstorm what aspect of science or engineering you're interested in, and then begin researching topics. Start by following the tips and advice from former ISEF students. Next, you'll want to figure out what forms to complete. To do that, you should visit Intel's Northwest Science Expo page for kids.
It's not too late, but it's getting down to the wire. Maybe the following links will help you out:
o Science Fair Central: For all your entire science fair need. They'll help you if you get stuck anywhere along the way (even in coming up with a topic).
o Science Buddies: If you are serious about your science fair — and I mean serious — then you'll have to check out the Science Buddies site. You can get some great ideas and maybe even get matched up with a scientist to help you out.
o Scifair.org the Internet's premiere resource for science fairs. Brought to you by the Society for Amateur Scientists (we're all amateurs at this), this site covers all of your science fair bases.
o Science Project.com information and support for Science Fair Projects. They say it's the world's largest website for Science Project ideas. I didn't count the number of ideas, so I'll have to take their word on it. Needless to say, they have a veritable smorgasbord of topics and ideas.
o View the SRC/IRB slideshow to learn the roles of adults in the registration and research processes.
o Register your projects at NWSE under the BHSE listing.
In Beaverton most participating schools have a preliminary SRC/IRB committee to approve projects before experimentation begins. Hillsboro schools use a shared SRC/IRB committee. Check with your local fair director for more information. How to form your own SRC/IRB committee.
o February 7, 2008 Last day for online registration for BHSE
o February 9, 2008 Last day to submit projects for final SRC approval
o February 13, 2008 SRC meeting at Portland State University
o February 21, 2008 Beaverton Hillsboro Science Expo, Intel Jones Farm
