Music at St.Luke's

Adult Choir

We have an active Adult Choir at St. Luke's, directed by Jane Lynch, who is also our organist and has been at St. Luke's since 1991.  The choir sings at the 10 a.m. service every Sunday, and on certain other occations such as Christmas Eve.  The choir always leads the Processional, the Sequence Hymn before the Gospel, and the Recessional; these are from the Episcopal Hymnal.

The Psalm is sung by a soloist, one of several members of the choir.
There is usually a Choir Anthem, selected by the Director, sung during the Offertory, and sometimes another during Communion; other times the Choir leads the congregation in singing one or more Communion hymns.

Choir music is normally accompanied by the organ, which is a small Holtkamp pipe organ.  We also have a grand piano which is used to accompany soloists, small groups, or children's voices as appropriate.

Choir rehearsal is on Sundays at 9 a.m., before the main service, and sometimes there is also a short one after the service.    New members are always welcome; anyone interested in joining the St. Luke's Choir may email Jane.

Special Programs
Our main special music program is on Christmas Eve each year, just before the late service.
This varies each year; for example, the program for Christmas Eve 2004 was:

Christmas Eve 2004
Choir Processional: Gaudete!
Medieval Carol
The Cutty Ren

Kay Bailey, recorder, and Ann Borden, harp
arr: Ann Borden
Choir Anthem: Riu, Riu, Chiu
16th Century Spanish Carol/Hopson
Choir Anthem: The Star Carol

Wendy Cook, soprano
Alfred Burt
Down in Yon Forest

Karen Gray, soprano, Kay Bailey, recorder, and Ann Borden, harp
English Carol
Choir Anthem:  Infant Holy, Infant Lowly
Polish Carol/Andrew Risinger
Solo:  Ave Maria

Karen Gray, soprano, and Ann Borden, harp
Bach/Gounod

For Christmas Eve 2005 we had a simpler program than usual, because, owing to the ongoing renovation project, we could not rehearse in the sanctuary or with the organ, and we could not be sure in advance that either of these would be available for the service.  In the event though, due to heroic efforts by all involved, everything necessary was ready and we were able to sing for an especially joyous Christmas Eve service, the first service in the newly renovated sanctuary.  Our program was:

Christmas Eve 2005
Choir Processional: Gaudete!
Medieval Carol
Congregational Hymn 82
Of the Father's Love Begotten
Choir Anthem: Sing We Now of Christmas
French Carol
Solo: Jesu Bambino

Karen Gray, soprano
Pietro Yon
Congregational Hymn 98
Unto Us a Boy is Born
Choir Anthem: Thou who wast rich beyond all splendor
French Carol
Harp Solo: Siciliana
     Ann Borden, Harp
Carlos Salzedo
Choir Anthem: Sir Christmas
William Mathias
Congregational Hymn 112
     Ann Borden, Harp
In the Bleak Midwinter

Other Special Music
We often have guest musicians, usually instrumentalists.  We have had flutes, harps, bagpipes, and other instruments.  These usually play the prelude and/or postlude but sometimes during the service.  Occasionally we have had guest singers, too.

The Carol Chain
A Christmas tradition at St. Luke's is the Carol Chain, held at the end of the main service on the last Sunday before Christmas.  It's a little hard to describe, but the entire congregation joins hands in a long chain, with choir members strategically interspersed, and sings carols while weaving around and about throughout the entire main sanctuary.  The idea is that everyone will come face to face with everyone else at least once and all can greet each other.  Only well-known carols are used, so that everyone can participate, from memory, and it always ends with "Silent Night."
The Children's Choir
St. Luke's has a Children's Choir which sings at services several times a year, usually the Communion Anthem, and they always participate in some of the Easter and Christmas services.  For more information about the Children's Choir, email the church office by clicking the link below.
