  • Santo has some older residents than Mrs Lavinia Withers, but she has lived in the town longer than any other citizen, lived there before the town was called Santo. Back in 1884 this budding town on the T&P railroad was called Sparta, a big tent hotel housed many of the residents.

  • Mrs Withers and her husband, C. C. Withers moved to Santo in 1884, where he taught the first school ever taught in the village. He also taught other neighboring schools throughout the years, and many woman and men throughtout the country, especialy on the south side recieved their first schooling from this able schoolmaster. Mrs Withers says that her husband walked to and from school. A distance of serveral miles. Briskley he walked through the vergin forest trails, never failing to be at his post. That was education and lerarning pioneered in texas. Mr Withers died in 1910.

  • Mr Withers built their house in Santo three years after they moved to the town where they lived until his death. Mrs Withers continues to live in this comfortable home to which she has become attached throughout the years. Here their children were born and reared and each nook and corner in the large rambling rooms hold favorite pieces and furniture with individual his stories of thier own. One does not get lonely in a house where they have lived for nearly half a century. Too many memories come floating back to keep one company.

  • Mrs withers was born in kentucky. During her girlhood days she helped her mother with spinning and weaving. She recalls with pride the beautiful linsey dresses she used to wear, which were dyed in stripes with hichory bark. She remembers the tedious fluting wich she carefully put into these dresses. A young lady did not feel well dressed unless her many ruffels were fluted. Besides the spinning of cotten, she also spun flax and wove it into table linen.

  • Mrs withers has been a member of the baptist church since she was 18 years of age. She spends her time making rugs and quilts. Many pretty hand made rugs and quilts adorn her home and give it a cozy home like atmosphere. Many interesting old pieces of furniture add a charm of By-gone days to her house. Amoung them is a comfortable, massive old chair which belonged to her Great great grandfather. Mrs withers has two living children, ten grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
